Shodashottari Dasha explained: the 116-year cycle of eight lords running 11 to 18 years, why Rahu is excluded and Ketu is not, the Pushya seed, and the hora condition that classically gates it.

What Shodashottari Dasha is

Shodashottari Dashashodashottara-shata, “a hundred and sixteen” — is a 116-year cycle of eight planetary periods, keyed to the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth.

It is one of the conditional udu dashas: a system the classics reserve for charts meeting a specific condition rather than applying at large. And it carries one structural quirk that sets it apart from every other dasha in common use, which is worth putting up front because it is the thing people get wrong about it.

Shodashottari excludes Rahu and keeps Ketu. Every other eight-lord nakshatra dasha does the opposite.

The eight lords and their years

Look at the last column: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 — eight consecutive integers, in order. As with Yogini, where the periods run 1 through 8, there is no table to memorise. The sequence position is the duration, offset by ten. And 11+12+…+18 = 116, which is where the name comes from.

The consequence is that Shodashottari is the flattest of the unequal systems. Its longest period is 18 years and its shortest is 11 — a ratio of about 1.6 to

  1. Vimshottari runs Venus 20 against the Sun 6, a ratio of more than 3 to 1. Shodashottari does not quite equalise the grahas the way Dwisaptati Sama does, but it comes closer than anything else that still bothers to differentiate them.

The node that is missing is the other one

Ketu holds 15 years here. Rahu does not appear at all.

This is genuinely distinctive. Ashtottari is eight lords with Rahu at 12 and no Ketu. Dwisaptati Sama is eight lords with Rahu at 9 and no Ketu. Yogini is eight yoginis with Rahu as Sankata and no Ketu. In all of them, when a node has to go, Ketu goes.

Shodashottari inverts that. If you are used to reading the udu family, the appearance of a Ketu Mahadasha in a system with no Rahu period will look like an error in the table. It is not. It is the system.

The nakshatra map

Shodashottari steps one lord per nakshatra, Vimshottari-style, so each lord owns scattered nakshatras rather than a contiguous run. That distinguishes it from Ashtottari, where each lord owns a block of three or four in a row, and it means the balance-at-birth arithmetic here is the simpler, single-nakshatra kind.

The seam at Pushya

Follow the sequence from Ashwini — Ketu, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter — and the next entry should be Saturn. Pushya gives the Sun instead.

That is the seam, and it is unavoidable: 27 nakshatras do not divide by 8 lords, so any eight-lord map of the zodiac must break somewhere. Shodashottari places the break at Pushya, anchoring the Sun — first of the sequence — there. From Pushya onward the cycle runs cleanly to Revati and wraps into Ashwini without another break. Pushya is the system’s seed for exactly this reason.

The seam is paid for in coverage. Three lords — the Sun, Mars and Jupiter — own four nakshatras each; the other five own three. So the starting lords are not equally likely, and a Sun, Mars or Jupiter opening is somewhat more common than the table’s symmetry suggests.

The balance at birth

Nobody is born at the clean start of a Mahadasha. Because each lord owns exactly one nakshatra at a time, the fraction of the nakshatra the Moon has already crossed is the fraction of the first period already spent.

A Moon 30% through Uttara Ashadha means 30% of the Moon’s sixteen years — 4 years 9 months — was gone before you were born, and your Shodashottari timeline opens with a balance of about 11 years 2 months of the Moon.

AstroShruti reads this off the Moon’s exact sidereal longitude, winds the first period back before your birth date by the elapsed part, and runs the sequence on from there. Because it hangs on the Moon’s longitude, the dates move with the ayanamsha — the same dependency behind the fortnight gap between the Dasha tab and the KP tab’s Vimshottari.

When Shodashottari applies — and how we handle it

Shodashottari is a conditional dasha, and its condition is the fiddliest in the family. The classical rule turns on the hora — the planetary hour — that the Lagna falls in, crossed with the fortnight:

It applies to a day birth in the bright fortnight (Shukla paksha) when the Lagna is in the Sun’s hora, or a day birth in the dark fortnight (Krishna paksha) when the Lagna is in the Moon’s hora.

That is a narrow and awkward gate. It needs the paksha, the day/night split, and the hora of the Lagna — three things that have nothing to do with the Moon’s nakshatra the rest of the system runs on.

In AstroShruti, applicability is advisory only, and the engine does not test it. Shodashottari is always computed, for every chart, and the timeline you are looking at was produced without checking your paksha, your hora or whether you were born by day. The condition is documented so the interpretation layer can raise it; the arithmetic is unconditional.

That is a deliberate choice — a system that silently refuses to draw is worse than one that draws with a caveat — but the burden lands on you. This page cannot tell you whether Shodashottari is classically appropriate for your chart. Given how restrictive the gate is, assume it probably is not unless you have checked.

Sub-periods

Every period sub-divides into the same eight lords, in the same proportions, starting from the parent period’s own lord:

Inside the 18-year Venus Mahadasha, the Venus antardasha runs 18 × 18/116 = 2y 9m 16d, and the Sun antardasha runs 18 × 11/116 = 1y 8m 15d.

A small pleasure of the proportional rule: because the formula is symmetric in the two lords, Venus/Sun and Sun/Venus are exactly the same length — 18 × 11/116 and 11 × 18/116 are the same number, 1y 8m 15d. That holds for every pair in every nakshatra dasha, and it is a quick way to sanity-check a printed table against ours.

What we do not compute

  • We do not gate on applicability. The hora-and-paksha condition is never tested. Nothing is suppressed, nothing on this page is flagged, and the timeline is drawn identically whether the condition holds or not. On a system whose classical gate is this narrow, that is the caveat that matters most.
  • We ship the PyJHora nakshatra map. The seam at Pushya and the resulting four-nakshatra Sun, Mars and Jupiter follow that baseline. Other printed tables place the seam differently; a chart cast on one of those will disagree with ours about the starting lord for some Moons, and therefore about every date after it. We do not offer a variant switch.
  • The CLASSICAL/EQUAL antardasha setting does nothing here. Both settings give identical dates — the proportional split already is the classical rule for the nakshatra dashas. It matters only for Naisargika, Kala and the six Jaimini rashi dashas.
  • We do not interpret the Rahu/Ketu inversion. That Ketu holds 15 years and Rahu holds none is structural. What it implies for reading a node-heavy chart under this system is a question for the astrologer, not the engine.
  • The 116-year cycle simply repeats past a full turn, with no distinction between a first and a second pass. The timeline is generated to span at least 120 years from birth so the current period never falls off the end.

Reading Shodashottari in practice

On a chart that meets the hora condition, Shodashottari is read as a genuine timing system beside Vimshottari — its flatter periods give a different weighting to the same life, and its Ketu period covers ground Vimshottari’s Rahu-heavy structure handles differently. On a chart that does not meet it, which is most, treat it as a curiosity.

Frequently asked questions

Why 116 years?

Because the eight lords' periods run 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 years, and those add to 116. Like Yogini's 36, the total is an arithmetic consequence of a run of consecutive numbers rather than a figure chosen for its own sake.

Why is Rahu excluded but Ketu kept?

This is what makes Shodashottari unusual. The other eight-lord udu dashas — Ashtottari, Dwisaptati Sama — drop Ketu and keep Rahu. Shodashottari does the reverse: Ketu holds a 15-year period and Rahu does not appear at all. It is the only common nakshatra dasha with a Ketu Mahadasha but no Rahu one.

When does Shodashottari apply?

Classically, when the Lagna falls in the Sun's hora during a day birth in the bright fortnight, or in the Moon's hora during a day birth in the dark fortnight. In AstroShruti the condition is advisory only — the engine computes the timeline for any chart and never tests it.

Which nakshatra does the cycle start from?

Pushya, the eighth. That is where the Sun — the first lord of the sequence — is anchored, and where the nakshatra table's seam sits. Because 27 nakshatras do not divide by 8 lords, a seam is unavoidable, and this system places it at Pushya.

Does the CLASSICAL vs EQUAL setting change Shodashottari's dates?

No. For every nakshatra dasha the proportional split is already the classical antardasha rule, so both settings compute identical periods. The setting only matters for Naisargika, Kala and the six Jaimini rashi dashas.

Is Shodashottari a long-life dasha because it totals 116 years?

No. The total is the cycle's length, not a claim about lifespan — the same caveat that applies to Vimshottari's 120. Nobody lives a full turn of it, and the timeline simply repeats for anyone who does.
