What is Hora?

A hora is a planetary hour. The daylight is divided into twelve horas and the night into twelve more, and each is ruled by one of the seven planets. Read the lord and you have the hour’s character — Jupiter’s hora for a contract, the Moon’s for travel. The English word hour shares its root with hora; both descend from the same idea of dividing the day into ruled portions.

Unlike a fixed 60-minute hour, a hora is one-twelfth of the actual daylight (day horas) or of the actual night (night horas). So on a long summer day the day horas run past 60 minutes while the night horas compress, and two cities on the same date see different clock times. It is a finer division than the choghadiya — twelve slots a half instead of eight.

The seven planetary hours

Each planet’s hora carries its own temperament — the natural benefics are the favourable hours, the natural malefics the guarded ones:

There is no “neutral” hora — every hour is either benefic or malefic by its lord. That does not make a malefic hora useless: the Sun’s hora suits an audience with authority, Mars’s suits competition, Saturn’s suits patient, long-haul work. It means only that they are not soft, all-purpose windows.

How the ruling planet is assigned — a worked example

Two rules generate the whole 24-hour grid:

1. The first hora after sunrise is the weekday’s lord. Because a vara begins at sunrise, Sunday opens with the Sun, Monday with the Moon, Tuesday with Mars, Wednesday with Mercury, Thursday with Jupiter, Friday with Venus, Saturday with Saturn.
2. Each following hora steps through the Chaldean order — Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon — as a continuous ring, without resetting at sunset.

Take Sunday, starting from the Sun. The twelve daytime horas run:

The night then continues the same ring unbroken; Sunday’s first night hora is Jupiter. Monday, starting from the Moon, opens: Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury… and so on.

Why the weekday names run in their order

Here is the elegant part, and it is not a coincidence. Count 24 horas from Sunday’s first (the Sun) and the 25th hora — the first hora of the next morning — lands on the Moon. So the day after Sun-day is Moon-day. Do it again and the 49th hora is Mars, giving Mangalavara (Tuesday); then Mercury (Wednesday), Jupiter (Thursday), Venus (Friday), Saturn (Saturday), and back to the Sun.

The order of the days of the week — in Sanskrit, Latin, and English alike — is literally the hora cycle sampled once every 24 hours. The planetary hour is older than the weekday name; the name is its shadow.

Reading the times

Because each hora is one-twelfth of the real day or night, the clock boundaries move:

• Longer summer daylight → day horas well over 60 minutes, night horas under.
• Winter → the reverse.
• A city further east reaches each hora at a different clock time.

Using a hora for muhurat

• Match the hora’s lord to the task: Jupiter or Mercury for study, contracts and money; Venus for art, marriage and comfort; the Moon for travel and daily errands; the Sun for authority and health; Mars for effort and competition; Saturn for discipline and service.
• The hora is a finer filter than the choghadiya — many people pick a good choghadiya first, then a suitable hora inside it.
• As always, cross-check Rahu Kaal: even a Jupiter hora inside Rahu Kaal is compromised.

Common mistakes

• Assuming a hora is 60 minutes. It is 1/12 of the actual day or night, so it rarely is, and it changes with the season and city.
• Thinking the night restarts the cycle. The ring is continuous across sunset — the night simply keeps counting from the last day hora.
• Reading a malefic hora as “bad.” It is specialised, not forbidden; the Sun, Mars and Saturn horas each have their own strong uses.
• Using the hora alone for a big decision. It times small tasks well, but a wedding or launch wants the full panchang — tithi, nakshatra, yoga and vara together.

The hora’s benefic/malefic label is a fixed property of the planet, not adjusted for its sign, dignity or retrogression, and there is no sub-hora or sub-lord layer. The hora is a fast, robust filter by planetary character; a full election that accounts for a planet’s real strength is a separate, deeper calculation.
