What is a Dasha?

A dasha cuts a life into planetary periods. At any moment one graha owns the stretch you are living through, and the tone of that stretch is its tone. Where the birth chart says what, the dasha says when.

Vimshottari is the system almost everyone means when they say “dasha”, and it is AstroShruti’s default. It is a 120-year cycle of nine periods, and it is keyed to the Moon — specifically, to the lord of the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth.

The nine lords and their years

That order is the cycle, and it never varies. What varies is where you enter it. Whatever your starting lord, the sequence runs on from there and wraps — someone starting at Rahu goes Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, and so on.

Where the cycle starts: the Moon’s nakshatra

There are 27 nakshatras and 9 lords, so the lords repeat three times around the zodiac — Ketu owns Ashwini, Magha and Mula; Venus owns Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha; and so on. Whichever nakshatra your Moon fell in, its lord owns your first Mahadasha.

This is why Vimshottari needs a birth time to be worth anything. The Moon crosses a nakshatra in roughly a day, and the fraction it has crossed is what fixes your dates.

The balance at birth

Nobody is born at the clean start of a Mahadasha. If your Moon is 40% of the way through its nakshatra, then 40% of that lord’s Mahadasha is already gone when you draw your first breath. The remainder is your balance.

The engine reads the Moon’s exact sidereal longitude, takes the fraction of the nakshatra traversed, and winds the first period back before your birth date by that proportion. So a chart with a Venus balance of 12 years shows a Venus Mahadasha that started eight years before the native was born and ends twelve years after. That is correct, and it is what makes the subsequent boundaries land where other software puts them.

Because it all hangs on the Moon’s longitude, the dasha depends on the ayanamsha — see the note below, which is the single most common source of “why don’t these dates match?”

Five levels deep

Every period sub-divides into the same cycle, in the same proportions, starting from the parent period’s own lord. AstroShruti drills five levels:

The rule is a single proportion applied recursively. A child period lasts parent_years × lord_years ÷ 120. So within a 20-year Venus Mahadasha, the Venus Antardasha runs 20 × 20/120 = 3 years 4 months; the Sun Antardasha inside it runs 20 × 6/120 = 1 year. Each Antardasha then splits nine ways again by the same formula, and so on down to Prana periods measured in hours.

A running chain — Venus / Saturn / Mercury / Moon / Mars — is what most predictive work actually reads, rather than the Mahadasha alone.

A note on the CLASSICAL vs EQUAL setting

The app has an advanced setting for the antardasha method, and it is worth being straight about what it does, because the name suggests more than it delivers here.

For Vimshottari, the setting changes nothing. Both options produce identical dates. The proportional split described above is the classical rule for the nakshatra dashas — there is no separate “classical” derivation to switch to, so the fast path and the classical path are the same path.

Where the setting bites is the systems whose classical sub-periods are chart-dependent and cannot be got from a proportion table:

  • Naisargika — CLASSICAL derives its bhuktis from the planets tenanting houses counted from the Mahadasha lord’s sign. EQUAL just splits proportionally.
  • Kala — CLASSICAL uses the two-phase day/night weighted split.
  • The six Jaimini rashi dashas — CLASSICAL uses each tradition’s own sign sequence.

For those four families, EQUAL is a deliberately cruder, faster split that does not need the chart rebuilt on every drill. If Vimshottari is all you read, leave the setting alone; it is not doing anything to your numbers.

Why the KP tab’s dasha differs by about a fortnight

If you compare the Dasha tab against the KP module you will find the Mahadasha boundaries land roughly two weeks apart. This is intended, it is documented in the code, and it is pinned by a test so it cannot be “tidied away” by accident.

The reason is the ayanamsha. The Dasha tab honours whatever ayanamsha you have set — Lahiri by default. The KP module reads its Moon off the KP-ayanamsha chart. The two ayanamshas differ by roughly a tenth of a degree, which is enough to shift the Moon’s fractional position within its nakshatra, which shifts the balance at birth, which shifts every boundary after it by about a fortnight.

The fix would be trivial and would be wrong. KP is self-consistent by ayanamsha: the star lords and sub lords that KP’s periods are read against are themselves KP-ayanamsha quantities. Timing them off a Lahiri Moon would make the KP tabs internally inconsistent — the dasha would disagree with the very lord chain it is supposed to be interpreted through. Two self-consistent answers is the correct outcome here; one blended answer would not be.

So: the Dasha tab is right for Parashari work, the KP tab is right for KP work, and the fortnight between them is the price of both being coherent.

Vimshottari beyond the dasha

The 120-year proportions do more work in this app than the timeline alone. The whole KP lord chain is built from them: each 13°20’ nakshatra is cut into nine subs in exactly the Vimshottari ratios — Ketu’s sub is 7/120 of the nakshatra, Venus’s 20/120 — starting from the star lord and running in Vimshottari order. Each sub divides the same way into sub-subs, and so on five deep.

So the sub-lord that the KP system turns on is a Vimshottari proportion mapped onto space rather than time. It is the same table, read in degrees instead of years.

Reading a dasha in practice

A dasha names the graha; it does not by itself say what that graha will do. What Venus’s Mahadasha delivers depends on where Venus sits in your chart, what it rules, how it is dignified — see Maitri Chakra — and what is happening in the sky meanwhile.

That last piece is gochar. The dasha opens the window; a transit over the relevant house is usually what walks through it. The two are read together, and a dasha read without transits tends to be right about the theme and badly wrong about the date.

Frequently asked questions

Why 120 years?

Because that is what the nine lords' periods add up to: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. The figure is the cycle's total, not a claim about lifespan — the timeline simply repeats past 120 years for anyone who outlives one full turn.

What is the balance of dasha at birth?

Nobody is born at the start of a Mahadasha. The Moon is somewhere in the middle of a nakshatra at birth, and the fraction of that nakshatra it has already crossed is the fraction of the first Mahadasha that has already elapsed. What is left is the balance. AstroShruti computes this from the Moon's exact sidereal longitude, so the first period genuinely begins before your birth.

Is Vimshottari the only dasha system in the app?

No — it is the default, but AstroShruti computes seventeen. Ten are Moon-nakshatra dashas (Vimshottari, Yogini, Ashtottari, Dwisaptati Sama, Shodashottari, Dwadashottari, Panchottari, Shatabdika, Shashtihayani and the chart-independent Naisargika), six are Jaimini rashi dashas (Chara, Narayana, Kalachakra, Sthira, Shoola, Mandooka), and one is Kala, the birth-time graha dasha. Most of the conditional ones classically apply only to charts meeting a specific condition.

Why does the KP tab show different dasha dates than the Dasha tab?

Because they use different ayanamshas, on purpose. The KP module reads its Moon off the KP-ayanamsha chart so that its dasha is consistent with the KP star and sub lords it is read against; the Dasha tab honours whatever ayanamsha you have set, Lahiri by default. The gap is around a fortnight at a Mahadasha boundary. It is a deliberate design decision and is pinned by a test, not an inconsistency waiting to be fixed.

What does the CLASSICAL vs EQUAL antardasha setting change?

Nothing at all for Vimshottari — for the nakshatra dashas the proportional split already is the classical rule, so both settings compute the same periods. The setting matters for Naisargika, Kala and the six Jaimini rashi dashas, whose classical sub-periods have to be derived from the chart.

How long is a dasha 'year'?

365.2425 days. It is a nominal year, not a birthday-to-birthday count, chosen to match Jagannatha Hora and the common astrological software — so the period dates line up with what other programs print.
