What is Panchaka Rahita?

Panchaka means “the fivefold”; rahita means “free of”. Panchaka Rahita is the part of the day that carries none of the five doshas — the clean ground.

Unlike Choghadiya or the Gowri table, which cut the day into equal parts and hand out fixed names, this table computes a fresh verdict for each lagna — each period during which a particular sign is rising. That makes its boundaries uneven and its verdicts genuinely calculated rather than looked up.

How it is computed

Four numbers are added together:

  • the nakshatra number (1–27)
  • the tithi number (1–30)
  • the vara number (weekday, Sunday = 1)
  • the lagna number (the rising sign, Aries = 1)

Divide the total by nine, and the remainder names the result:

Remainder Result Verdict
1 Mrityu Panchaka Evil — death; the one to take seriously
2 Agni Panchaka Bad — fire; risk of burning, accident, dispute
4 Raja Panchaka Neutral — royal; often read as favourable
6 Chora Panchaka Bad — thief; loss, theft, betrayal
8 Roga Panchaka Bad — illness
0, 3, 5, 7 Shubha (Rahita) Good — free of all five

Four of the nine remainders are clean, so a little under half the day is typically Panchaka Rahita — though the periods are uneven, so that is a rough guide rather than a rule.

Because three of the four inputs change slowly and only the lagna changes briskly, the reading tends to move with the rising sign: the verdict often holds for a whole lagna and then jumps.

A worked example

Suppose a period falls on the 5th nakshatra, the 8th tithi, a Tuesday, with Aries rising. Weekdays count from Sunday = 1, so Tuesday = 3, and Aries = 1:

(5 + 8 + 3 + 1) = 17 → 17 ÷ 9 leaves remainder 8Roga Panchaka.

Change only the tithi to the 4th and the weekday to Monday (= 2), keeping the same nakshatra and lagna:

(5 + 4 + 2 + 1) = 12 → 12 ÷ 9 leaves remainder 3Shubha (Rahita) — clean.

Two small changes flip the verdict, which is exactly why the table is recomputed for every period rather than read from a fixed list.

What the five actually mean

The names are specific, and this is the part worth knowing, because it decides whether a period matters to you:

  • Mrityu Panchaka — the grave one. Avoided for journeys, surgery, and anything where safety is the concern.
  • Agni Panchaka — fire. Avoided for anything involving flame, machinery, or the kind of dispute that catches.
  • Raja Panchaka — the king’s. Traditionally good for dealing with authority, applications, and matters of position; adverse chiefly for the reverse. We mark it neutral rather than bad.
  • Chora Panchaka — the thief’s. Avoided for carrying valuables, for transactions, for lending.
  • Roga Panchaka — illness. Avoided for treatment begun electively.

A period is only inauspicious for what its dosha names. Chora Panchaka has nothing to say about a fever, and Roga Panchaka has nothing to say about your wallet. Only Mrityu is treated as a general prohibition.

What it is used for

Panchaka Rahita is a construction and undertaking filter more than a personal one. It is checked most often for:

  • Laying a foundation or beginning building work
  • Roofing, and anything involving timber or fire
  • Journeys, especially southward
  • Beds and bedsteads — a specific classical prohibition during Panchaka

Where a tradition gives a fuller list, it is usually these: the five doshas attach to acts, not to people.

Not the Panchak of the calendar

This is the confusion worth clearing.

The Panchak most people have heard of is a five-day window when the Moon passes through the last five nakshatras — Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati — and it recurs monthly. It is a property of the calendar, and it is the one families mean when they say “we are in Panchak”.

Panchaka Rahita is a different scheme with the same root word. It is computed per lagna from four inputs, several times a day, and it takes no notice of which nakshatra-run the Moon is in. A day inside a Panchak week can be Shubha all afternoon on this table, and a day well outside one can be Mrityu Panchaka at noon.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing it with the calendar Panchak. They share a root word and nothing else — see the section above. This is the single most common error.
  • Avoiding every non-Shubha period. Each dosha obstructs only what it names; Chora is about theft, not fever. Only Mrityu is a general caution.
  • Reading Raja Panchaka as bad. It is marked neutral and is often favourable for dealings with authority; do not treat it like Mrityu.
  • Expecting fixed clock times. The periods are lagna windows — uneven, location-dependent, and recomputed daily.

Notes on this table

  • Times are local to the selected city — the lagna boundaries depend on your latitude, so a Chennai table and a Delhi table genuinely differ.
  • Each period is labelled with the rising sign that defines it.
  • The nakshatra and tithi are taken at the midpoint of each lagna period, not at sunrise, so a limb that changes mid-morning is reflected in the periods after it.
  • The rising sign is sidereal, using the Lahiri ayanamsha.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the Panchak of the Hindu calendar?

No, though the name is shared and the confusion is common. The Panchak most people mean is a five-day stretch when the Moon transits Dhanishta to Revati, and it is a property of the calendar. Panchaka Rahita is a moment-by-moment reading: it scores each rising-sign period of the day from four inputs, and it can be clean during a Panchak week and doshic outside one.

Why do the periods have uneven lengths?

Because each is a lagna — the time one zodiac sign takes to rise at your latitude — and signs do not rise evenly. Some take well over two hours, others under one, and the pattern shifts with the season and how far you are from the equator.

Which of the five is worst?

Mrityu Panchaka. It is the one classical practice is most insistent about, and it is marked separately on this table. Raja Panchaka is the mildest — several traditions read it as favourable rather than adverse for anything to do with authority, position or the state.

Do I have to avoid every period that isn't Shubha?

No. Each panchaka is specific about what it obstructs — Chora concerns theft, Roga concerns illness, Agni concerns fire — so a period doshic for one purpose may be irrelevant to yours. Only Mrityu is treated as generally adverse.
