What is the lagna?

The lagna, or ascendant, is the point of the zodiac climbing over the eastern horizon at a given moment. It is the fastest-moving element in Vedic astrology: the whole zodiac wheels past the horizon once a day, so the lagna advances a full 360° between one sunrise and the next.

That speed is what makes it matter. The grahas move slowly enough that everyone born on the same day shares them, but the lagna changes sign roughly every two hours — so it is the lagna, more than anything else, that distinguishes two charts cast minutes apart. It is also why a birth time needs to be accurate: a few minutes of error near a sign boundary moves the entire house framework.

The Udaya Lagna table

Udaya means rising. This table gives the clock times at which each rashi takes over the eastern horizon, from today’s sunrise to tomorrow’s. Because the ascendant completes one full circuit in that span, all twelve signs rise exactly once — though which one starts, and in what order the durations fall, depends on your latitude and the date.

AstroShruti finds the boundaries rather than assuming them: it samples the true ascendant across the Ahoratri to bracket each sign change, then narrows the crossing to about a second. The times you see are the real ingress moments for your city, not a two-hour grid laid over sunrise.

Why the durations are so uneven

The obvious guess — 24 hours over 12 signs, so two hours each — is only the average, and outside the tropics it can be badly wrong.

The zodiac is tilted relative to the horizon, and that angle changes as the earth turns. When the ecliptic meets the horizon steeply, a sign is dragged across quickly; when it lies flat against the horizon, a sign can take far longer than two hours to clear it. Signs are conventionally split into two groups by this behaviour:

The effect grows with latitude. In Chennai the spread between the fastest and slowest sign is modest; in London or Toronto it is dramatic, and a single lagna can hold the horizon for several hours while another passes in well under one. This is the main reason a lagna table has to be computed for your actual place.

A worked example — Delhi, 20 July 2026

Computed from Delhi’s true sunrise, the ascendant opens at Cancer and runs:

Even at Delhi’s latitude the spread is real — Libra and Scorpio hold the horizon for 139 minutes while Aquarius passes in 87, a difference of nearly an hour. Run the same date at London’s latitude and that spread widens to hours. None of these are the “two-hour” grid the average suggests.

How to use it

The lagna table is a foundation, not a verdict. Read on its own it tells you which sign — and so which lord, and which set of house placements — governs a moment. It answers “what is the character of this time”, not “is this time good”.

For an auspiciousness reading, the lagna is combined with the other limbs. The Panchaka Rahita table on this site uses exactly these lagna boundaries, folding each period’s lagna number together with the tithi, nakshatra and vara to produce a verdict. In classical electional practice the lagna is also weighed for its own strength — its lord’s condition, benefics in kendras, malefics kept out of the ascendant — which is chart work rather than an almanac lookup.

Common mistakes

• Assuming every lagna lasts two hours. Two hours is only the 24-over-12 average; real durations vary by sign, latitude and date, as the worked example shows.
• Reading a lagna as auspicious or inauspicious by itself. This table is deliberately neutral; the auspiciousness verdict comes from Panchaka Rahita, which uses these same boundaries.
• Expecting the day to start at Aries. It starts at whichever sign is rising at your sunrise — Cancer in the example above — not at a fixed sign.
• Treating the birth lagna as approximate. Because the ascendant moves fast, a few minutes’ error in birth time can shift the rising sign and the whole house frame — which is exactly why this quantity is computed to the second.

• The times are local to the selected city, computed from its true sunrise.
• Sign positions are sidereal, using the Lahiri ayanamsha.
• Houses are reckoned Whole Sign, so the rising rashi is the first house.
• This table assigns no quality to any lagna — every row is neutral by design. Auspiciousness is a judgement the other tables make.
