Kala Dasha
Kala (Kaala) Dasha explained: the dasha driven by the clock, not the Moon. How a day or night birth splits 120 years into two portions, the 1..9 weighting from Sun to Ketu, and the eighteen Mahadashas.
A dasha made of daylight
Ask most dasha systems what your first period is and they will look at a planet. Ask Kala and it looks at the sky: was the Sun up?
Kaala is time itself, and this system takes that literally. It does not read your Moon. It does not read your Lagna. It reads where the moment of your birth fell in the span between one horizon crossing and the next — sunrise to sunset if you were born by day, sunset to sunrise if by night — and it builds your whole timeline out of that one fraction.
This makes Kala the odd one out even among the odd ones. Naisargika ignores the chart because it is about the natural life. Kala ignores the chart because its subject is the clock.
Day or night, and how far in
The engine computes two things from your birth data, and only two:

A birth in Kanpur at 06:40 with sunrise at 06:20 and sunset at 17:20 is a Day birth, 20 minutes into an 11-hour day: a fraction of about 0.03. A birth at 22:00 is a Night birth, measured from that evening’s sunset to the next morning’s sunrise. A birth at 03:00 is also a Night birth — but its segment began at the previous day’s sunset, and the engine reaches back for it specifically rather than pretending the night starts at midnight.
Both are real sunrises and sunsets for your latitude and longitude, off the Swiss Ephemeris, not table values. Which is why Kala is more sensitive to a wrong birth place than almost anything else in the app.
The two portions
The 120-year human span is cut in two by that fraction:
- Cycle 1 — the elapsed share:
120 × fractionyears. - Cycle 2 — the remainder:
120 × (1 − fraction)years.
Both cycles run the nine grahas. So the day-birth at fraction 0.03 above lives about 3.6 years in the first cycle and about 116.4 in the second; a birth at the exact midpoint of its segment gets 60 and 60. The two always sum to 120.
There is something honest about this construction: it says the shape of your life mirrors the shape of the light on the day you arrived. Born just after dawn and your first cycle is compressed into infancy and the second is everything else. Born in the late afternoon and the halves are more even. It is a strange idea and the system commits to it completely.
The nine grahas, weighted 1 to 9
Within each cycle, the grahas run in natural order and take a share by their position in the queue:

The weights are 1+2+…+9 = 45, and they are a ramp along the natural order — not a claim about the grahas’ relative importance. The Sun is short because it leads; Ketu is long because it trails.
Nine periods per cycle, two cycles, eighteen Mahadashas in all, running contiguously from the moment of birth. There is no balance at birth: Kala starts where you start.
Antardashas: the two-phase eighteen
Kala’s sub-periods are not a repeat of the Mahadasha rule at smaller scale. They are their own thing, and they are the reason the CLASSICAL setting exists.
Under CLASSICAL, every Mahadasha divides into eighteen antardashas: the
nine grahas run through a day-phase worth fraction of the parent, then the
nine run again through a night-phase worth the rest — each phase internally
weighted 1…9. The day/night proportion that shaped your whole life recurs inside
every single period of it, self-similarly, all the way down to Prana.
Under EQUAL, the drill falls back to a single stateless pass of the nine grahas at the 1…9 weights, with no phase split. Faster; it does not need your birth context rebuilt on every tap; and it is a different answer.
If you toggle the antardasha-method setting and your Kala sub-periods jump from eighteen entries to nine, that is exactly what happened.
What we do not compute
The place where our Kala is knowingly not PyJHora’s, stated plainly:
- The Mahadasha uses a 2-way day/night split, not a 4-fold twilight split. This is the important one. We derive the fraction from a simple sunrise→sunset (or sunset→sunrise) segment. PyJHora instead divides the day and the night into six parts each under a DAWN / DAY / DUSK / NIGHT scheme, which yields a different fraction and therefore different Mahadasha boundaries. Our split is astronomically sound and self-consistent — the same fraction drives both the Mahadasha and the two-phase antardasha — but it is not bit-exact with PyJHora at the Kala Mahadasha level, and we would rather say so than let you discover it against another program. Adopting the fourfold scheme is a contained future upgrade, and it would be shipped behind a flag so existing charts do not shift underneath anyone.
- Polar births degrade to a default. Above the Arctic and Antarctic circles there are dates with no sunrise or no sunset at all, and the segment the whole system rests on does not exist. Rather than fail, the engine returns “Day” at a fraction of exactly 0.5 — a neutral 60/60 split. That is a fallback, not a computation. If your birth place is that far north or south, the Kala tab is not telling you anything.
- The fraction is clamped away from the endpoints. A birth landing exactly on sunrise or exactly on sunset would produce a zero-length cycle, so the fraction is held a hair inside 0 and 1. Practically invisible; mathematically it means no cycle is ever truly empty.
- No conditional applicability check. The classical literature places conditions on when several dashas are the right one to read. We compute Kala for any chart you hand it and leave the judgement of whether it applies to you.
- The response carries a rashi-shaped header. Kala is returned with the sign-dasha response envelope, with the Day/Night context sitting in the field that normally holds a seed sign. That is a UI convenience so the tab shows the day/night line instead of an irrelevant Moon-nakshatra line. Kala’s period lords are grahas, not signs, whatever the envelope says.
Reading it in practice
Kala answers a question no other dasha in the set asks, which is what your time of birth means as distinct from your date of birth. Two siblings born the same day twelve hours apart have nearly identical Naisargika timelines, similar Chara periods if their Lagnas agree, and Kala timelines that are mirror images of each other.
Read it beside gochar and the Vimshottari chain rather than in place of them. It is a minority system and it is best used as a second opinion — the tradition treats it as one, and so should you.

Frequently asked questions
What makes Kala different from every other dasha?
Its input. Vimshottari reads the Moon's nakshatra; the Jaimini dashas read the Lagna and the sign lords; Naisargika reads nothing. Kala reads the **clock against the horizon** — whether you were born by day or by night, and how far through that stretch of daylight or darkness you arrived. No planet's position enters the Mahadasha calculation at all except the Sun's, and the Sun only insofar as it defines sunrise and sunset.
Why are there eighteen Mahadashas and not nine?
Because the nine grahas run twice — once through the day-portion of the 120-year span and once through the night-portion. A daytime birth 30% through the daylight gets a first cycle of 36 years and a second of 84; the nine grahas share each. Nine plus nine is eighteen, and the two cycles together are exactly 120 years for everyone.
Why does Ketu get the longest period and the Sun the shortest?
Because the weighting is positional, not planetary. The grahas run in natural order — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — and are weighted 1 through 9 by their place in that queue. The Sun is first so it gets 1/45; Ketu is last so it gets 9/45. This is not a statement that Ketu matters nine times more than the Sun. It is a ramp, and the order it ramps along is fixed.
Does Kala need my birth city?
Yes, and more than most systems do. Sunrise and sunset are local quantities, so the same clock time is a day birth in one city and a night birth in another, and a different fraction in a third. Change the latitude or longitude and the whole timeline moves — sometimes by decades, if the change flips you across sunrise.
What if I was born at 3 a.m.?
That is a night birth belonging to the *previous* day's sunset. The engine handles this explicitly: a pre-dawn birth is measured from the sunset before it to the sunrise after it, not from the coming evening's sunset. It is the same distinction the panchang makes when it runs the Hindu day sunrise to sunrise.
Is Kala the same thing as Kalachakra?
No, and the shared syllable is the only thing they have in common. Kala is a **graha** dasha driven by birth time. Kalachakra is a **rashi** dasha driven by the Moon's nakshatra pada. Different input, different period lords, different mathematics, different family of the tradition entirely.
