How the date is decided
Ram Navami is Chaitra Shukla Navami — the ninth tithi of the waxing fortnight of Chaitra, the first lunar month of the year.
The vyapini reference is madhyahna, solar midday: the day whose midpoint between sunrise and sunset runs under Navami is the day that carries the festival. The reason is the tradition itself, which places the birth at noon.
The mirror of Janmashtami
The two great birth festivals in this calendar are built the same way and point at opposite ends of the day:
- Ram Navami — the birth is placed at midday, so the natural reference is madhyahna, and that is what we compute.
- Janmashtami — the birth is placed at midnight, so the natural reference is nishita. Here the two large traditions actually disagree, and this site computes the sunrise rule instead for reasons set out in full on that page.
Ram Navami has no comparable dispute. Madhyahna is well defined in every year — every day has a midday — so the rule never needs a fallback, which is exactly the property the midnight rule lacks.
Chaitra Navratri
Ram Navami is the ninth night of Chaitra Navratri, the spring nine-night observance that opens the lunar year at Gudi Padwa on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada.
Chaitra Navratri does not have its own entry in this calendar; only the autumn Sharad Navratri does. Where you need the intervening days, the tithis run in order from Pratipada, and the panchang for any date gives you which one is running.
Why the Gregorian date moves so widely
Chaitra opens the lunar year, and the lunar year runs about eleven days short of the solar one. Ram Navami therefore drifts earlier each spring until an intercalary month is inserted and it jumps forward by roughly a month. The practical range is late March to mid-April, and the eleven-year table above shows the whole cycle rather than a single date.
Major festivals do not fire inside an Adhika month, so a leap Chaitra pushes Ram Navami into the true Chaitra that follows.

The locally useful numbers are sunrise and sunset — madhyahna is derived from them, so the moment the rule turns on is different in Chennai and in Lucknow — plus the exact start and end of the Navami tithi. All three are on the panchang for your city and date.

Is Ram Navami the last day of Chaitra Navratri?
It falls on the ninth tithi, which is the ninth night of Chaitra Navratri. Chaitra Navratri is not computed as a separate observance here; only the Sharad one in Ashwin has its own entry.
What is madhyahna exactly?
The midpoint between sunrise and sunset — solar midday. It is not 12:00 on the clock and usually not noon either, and it moves with your location and the time of year.
Why does the date swing between late March and mid-April?
Because the lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the solar one, so the date drifts earlier annually until an intercalary month resets it. Chaitra sits right at the start of the lunar year, which makes the swing especially visible.
