What is Chandrabalam?
Chandrabalam — Chandra Bala, the strength of the Moon — asks a narrow and practical question: where is today’s Moon sitting relative to the sign you were born under?
The Moon governs the mind in Vedic astrology, and this is the almanac’s quickest check on whether the day is likely to run with you or against you. Unlike Choghadiya or Rahu Kaal, which are the same for everyone in a city, Chandrabalam is personal: it gives a different answer for each of the twelve janma rashis on the same day.
How it is counted
Count from your janma rashi to the sign the Moon occupies today, inclusive of both. If you were born under Simha (Leo) and the Moon is in Tula (Libra), that is Leo (1), Virgo (2), Libra (3) — the Moon is 3rd from your rashi.
That number decides the verdict:
| Position from janma rashi | Verdict |
|---|---|
| 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th | Strong — favourable |
| 2nd, 5th, 9th | Neutral — no obstacle, no help |
| 4th, 8th, 12th | Weak — avoid electing this time |
The three weak positions are the ones classical texts treat as difficult ground for the Moon: the 4th (the seat of the mind and home), the 8th (the house of obstruction), and the 12th (the house of loss). The strong set — 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11 — includes the three upachaya houses (3, 6, 11) where effort is held to improve matters over time.
A worked example — the Moon in Taurus
Take a day when today’s Moon is in Taurus (Vrishabha). Reading down the twelve janma rashis, counting each one’s distance to Taurus:
- Strong: Taurus (1st), Cancer (3rd), Libra… — in full: Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces.
- Neutral: Aries, Virgo, Capricorn (2nd, 5th, 9th).
- Weak: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius (12th, 8th, 4th).
So on that day a Sagittarius-born has strong Chandra Bala while a Libra-born has weak — same Moon, opposite reading, which is the whole point of a personal check. Tomorrow the Moon moves on and the pattern shifts with it.
What it is used for
Chandra Bala is checked before things you have a choice about and want to go smoothly:
- Travel, especially the start of a journey
- Ceremonies and samskaras — the family’s Chandra Bala is often weighed, not only the principal’s
- Signing, buying, investing — anything you would rather not revisit
- Medical procedures that can be scheduled
It is not applied to routine work, to things already under way, or to worship and remedial practice.
An important limitation of this table
AstroShruti evaluates Chandrabalam from the Moon’s sign at sunrise, and reports one verdict for the whole day. That is the conventional almanac treatment, and it is what a printed panchang does.
But the Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days, and when it does so during the day, the verdict genuinely changes at that moment — and this table will not show it. On an ingress day, treat the reading as describing the morning, and check the Moon’s actual sign in the app if the timing is important. Where a decision is finely balanced, that is the honest way to use it.
Common mistakes
- Looking up your sun sign. Chandrabalam is read from your janma rashi (the Moon’s sign at birth), which is usually not your western sun sign.
- Treating weak Chandra Bala as a ban on the whole day. It is a reason to postpone something elective, not to stop routine life or ongoing work.
- Ignoring a mid-day Moon ingress. The table reads the Moon at sunrise; on a sign-change day the verdict really shifts mid-day, and this row will not show it.
- Reading it in isolation from Tarabalam. The two are companions — Tarabalam reads the Moon by nakshatra; check both.
Notes on this table
- The Moon’s sign is sidereal, using the Lahiri ayanamsha, which is why it will differ from a western ephemeris by roughly 24°.
- The row matching today’s Moon sign is marked — that is the rashi for whom the Moon is in the 1st.
- Positions are counted by sign, not by degree: a Moon at the last degree of a sign is still counted in that sign.
Frequently asked questions
Which rashi should I look up — my sun sign?
No. Use your janma rashi, the sign the Moon occupied at your birth, which is what Vedic astrology means by "your rashi". It is usually not your western sun sign. If you don't know it, cast your kundli in the app.
What if Chandrabalam is weak today?
It is one factor, not a verdict. Classical practice treats weak Chandra Bala as a reason to postpone something optional and elective — a journey, a ceremony, a purchase — rather than a reason to stop living. Routine work, ongoing commitments and remedial worship are not held to it.
How often is Chandrabalam weak for me?
Three of the twelve positions are unfavourable, and the Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, so roughly a quarter of the time — about seven days a month, usually in runs of two or three.
Is Chandrabalam more important than Tarabalam?
They are companions and are normally checked together: Chandrabalam reads the Moon by sign from your janma rashi, Tarabalam reads it by nakshatra from your janma nakshatra. Traditional guidance is that strong Tarabalam can carry a moment through mediocre Chandra Bala, but a moment weak on both is one to avoid.
