Special Lagnas — Bhava, Hora, Ghati, Sri, Indu & Varnada
The six special lagnas explained: Bhava, Hora and Ghatika from the sunrise Sun and the ishta kaal; Sri from the Moon's nakshatra traversal; Indu from the two 9th lords' kalas; Varnada from Jaimini's odd-even count — with the exact formulas AstroShruti uses and the two places the classics disagree.
What is a special lagna?
The word lagna usually means the rising sign — the point of the ecliptic on the eastern horizon at birth, the anchor of the Lagna Chart. But the classical tradition defines several other lagnas: sensitive points that behave like alternative ascendants, each used for a particular kind of reading. AstroShruti calls these the special lagnas and shows them as “ascendants other than the rising sign.”
None of them is read from the horizon. Three — the Bhava, Hora and Ghatika lagnas — are seeded from the Sun at sunrise and advanced by the time elapsed since, at a fixed rate. Three more — Sri, Indu and Varnada — are built out of other parts of the chart entirely: the Moon’s nakshatra, a table of kala values, and a count between two lagnas.
The ishta kaal: the clock the first three use
The Bhava, Hora and Ghatika lagnas are all driven by one quantity — the ishta kaal, the elapsed time from sunrise to the moment of birth, measured in ghatikas.
- One ghatika is 24 minutes.
- So there are 2.5 ghatikas per hour.
- The engine takes the hours elapsed from sunrise to birth and multiplies by 2.5 to get the ishta kaal in ghatikas.
A birth 4 hours after sunrise, for example, has an ishta kaal of 4 × 2.5 = 10 ghatikas. That single number feeds all three.
The rate formula, exactly as the engine computes it
Each of the first three starts at the Sun’s longitude at sunrise and advances by 30° (one sign) for a fixed number of ghatikas. The engine computes:
longitude = sunrise Sun + (ishta kaal ÷ ghatikas-per-sign) × 30°
The only thing that differs between the three is the rate — how many ghatikas it takes to move one whole sign:

So the Bhava lagna is the slowest — it takes 5 ghatikas (2 hours) to cross one sign — while the Ghatika lagna is the fastest, changing sign every single ghatika (24 minutes). The resulting longitude is then normalised into the 0°–360° range and labelled with its sign, degree, nakshatra and the relevant lords, just like any other point.
A structural walkthrough
Take the ishta kaal of 10 ghatikas from the example above, and suppose the Sun stood at 20° of a sign at sunrise. Working each lagna from the formula:
- Bhava lagna: 10 ÷ 5 = 2 signs of advance. Start at 20°, add 2 × 30° = 60°. Result: 80° → 20° of the sign two ahead.
- Hora lagna: 10 ÷ 2.5 = 4 signs of advance. 20° + 4 × 30° = 140° → 20° of the sign four ahead.
- Ghatika lagna: 10 ÷ 1 = 10 signs of advance. 20° + 10 × 30° = 320° → 20° of the sign ten ahead.
Notice how the same elapsed time throws the three lagnas into three different signs — the whole reason all three are computed and shown separately. (The degree within the sign matches here only because the ishta kaal was a whole number of signs for each; in general each lands at its own degree.)
The Sri lagna: the Ghatika lagna, moved by the Moon
The Sri lagna (Sree lagna) is a Jaimini-tradition point, classically weighed for prosperity and the flow of resources. It begins where the Ghatika lagna already is and moves it by how far the Moon has travelled through its nakshatra:
Sri lagna = Ghatika lagna + (fraction of the Moon’s nakshatra elapsed) × 360°
The fraction is of the whole zodiac, not of a sign, which is what makes this point move so dramatically:

Because a nakshatra is only 13°20′ wide and the Moon crosses one in about a day, the Sri lagna sweeps the entire zodiac roughly once per nakshatra. It is, with the Ghatika lagna, the most birth-time-sensitive point on the list.
The Indu lagna: a sum of two lords’ kalas
The Indu lagna (Dhana lagna) is the classical wealth ascendant, and it is computed from a table rather than from the clock. Three steps:
- Find the lord of the 9th sign from the Lagna, and the lord of the 9th sign from the Moon.
- Add their kala values:

- Divide the sum by 12 and count the remainder from the Moon’s sign, inclusively — the Moon’s own sign is 1. A remainder of 0 counts as 12, not as zero.
Rahu and Ketu never appear in that table, and they never need to: neither owns a sign, so neither can be a 9th lord.
A worked example. Lagna in Libra, Moon in Taurus. The 9th from Libra is Gemini, whose lord is Mercury (8 kalas). The 9th from Taurus is Capricorn, whose lord is Saturn (1 kala). 8 + 1 = 9. Counting 9 signs from Taurus inclusively — Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn — the Indu lagna falls in Capricorn.
The Varnada lagna: Jaimini’s odd-even count
The Varnada lagna is not measured at all — it is counted, between the Lagna and the Hora lagna, using the classical odd/even direction rule.
- Count to the Lagna. If the Lagna is in an odd sign (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius), count inclusively from Aries forward. If it is in an even sign, count inclusively from Pisces backward.
- Count to the Hora lagna the same way, by its own sign’s parity.
- Combine. If the two signs share parity — both odd or both even — add the two counts. If they do not, take their difference.
- Count the result off. Reduce it modulo 12 (a result of 0 counts as 12) and count that many signs from Aries forward if the Lagna is odd, or from Pisces backward if the Lagna is even.
A worked example. Lagna in Libra — an odd sign, and the 7th from Aries, so its count is 7. Hora lagna in Scorpio — an even sign, and the 5th back from Pisces (Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio), so its count is 5. Libra is odd and Scorpio even, so the counts are differenced: 7 − 5 = 2. The Lagna is odd, so count 2 forward from Aries: Aries, Taurus. The Varnada lagna is in Taurus.
The Varnada lagna carries the Lagna’s own degree into that sign — it is an ascendant re-counted, not a point with a rate of its own.
Where the classics disagree — and what AstroShruti does about it
Two of the six have a rule that genuinely forks. AstroShruti computes both readings of each, ships the better-sourced one as the default, and puts the other one behind a switch in Settings → Lagnas (Advanced) rather than picking a side quietly.

The Sri lagna default follows Sanjay Rath’s presentation of the Jaimini sutras and matches what Jagannatha Hora computes. The Varnada default is the rule as given in BPHS’s Varnada chapter in R. Santhanam’s translation.
The two Varnada readings are not equally attested, and the app says so. The default has a chapter and a translator behind it. The alternative — reversing on the result’s parity — is what circulates in commentary and in some software, and we have not found a primary source for it. It ships because a reader reconciling an AstroShruti chart against software that took the other reading deserves to see why the two disagree. It does not ship as an equal.
How the app shows them
In the AstroShruti app the Special Lagnas atom is captioned “Ascendants other than the rising sign” and presents a table with a house column:

The House column places each special lagna relative to the natal ascendant, so you can see, for instance, that the Hora lagna falls in your 5th house from the rising sign.
Under the table, a “How these were derived” block prints the working for the three that need it: which traversal fraction the Sri lagna used, which two 9th lords the Indu lagna summed and to what, and the Varnada counts with the direction they were taken in. A point you cannot check by hand is a point you have to take on faith, so the working is always on screen rather than tucked behind a settings page.
How to read them
- Each has its own traditional use. The Hora lagna is classically weighed for wealth and material flow, the Bhava lagna for the general body of life circumstances, the Ghatika lagna for a finer and faster layer, the Sri lagna for prosperity, and the Indu lagna for wealth in particular — but AstroShruti computes their positions and leaves this interpretive weighting to the reading. These specialised uses are classical lore, not something the engine encodes.
- They move at very different speeds. The Ghatika lagna sweeps a sign every 24 minutes and the Sri lagna sweeps the whole zodiac in about a day, so a small error in birth time moves both a great deal; the Bhava lagna and the count-derived Varnada are far more forgiving. Treat the fast lagnas as sensitive to birth-time accuracy.
- Sunrise is the hinge for four of the six. Bhava, Hora and Ghatika are anchored to the Sun at sunrise, and Sri rides on the Ghatika lagna — so the governing sunrise, and the rule that a pre-dawn birth belongs to the previous solar day, sets all four. Honest notes and limitations
- The Indu lagna’s degree is a convention, not a classic. The classical rule fixes a sign and stops there; it gives Indu no degree. So that the point has a definite longitude, AstroShruti carries the Moon’s degree-within-sign into the Indu sign — the count starts from the Moon, so it is the natural anchor. Read the sign as classical and the degree as ours. The app flags this in the printed working rather than letting four decimal places imply a precision the tradition never claimed.
- Pranapada is deferred. The classical set includes a Pranapada lagna, but it follows a variant formula the engine does not yet implement. Rather than show an unvalidated value, AstroShruti computes six lagnas and not a seventh.
- Whole-circle advance is kept, not wrapped early. The rate formula lets the advance run past a full circle (the Ghatika lagna’s 10-sign jump above), and the result is normalised at the end. This is faithful to the rate rule — the lagna genuinely laps the zodiac for a late-in-the-day birth. The Sri lagna’s traversal fraction works the same way.
- Positions only. As with the upagrahas, the engine reports where each special lagna sits; it attaches no benefic/malefic or predictive verdict.
Where it connects
The first three special lagnas share their sunrise-and-ishta-kaal engine with the time-based Upagrahas, and all six extend the single rising-sign lagna of the Lagna Chart into a family of alternative ascendants. The sunrise they depend on comes from the same panchanga machinery as the Birth Panchang.

Because it advances one whole sign for every single ghatika of elapsed time, while the Hora lagna takes 2.5 ghatikas per sign and the Bhava lagna 5. Faster advance means the Ghatika lagna sweeps the whole zodiac in far less time — it changes sign the quickest of the three.
How is the Sri lagna calculated?
Take how far the Moon has travelled through its nakshatra as a fraction of that nakshatra, and add that same fraction of the whole zodiac (360°) to the Ghatika lagna. A Moon exactly halfway through its nakshatra throws the Sri lagna 180° from the Ghatika lagna.
How is the Indu lagna calculated?
Find the lord of the 9th house from the Lagna and the lord of the 9th from the Moon. Add their classical kala values (Sun 30, Moon 16, Mars 6, Mercury 8, Jupiter 10, Venus 12, Saturn 1), divide by 12, and count the remainder from the Moon's sign inclusively. A remainder of 0 counts as 12.
How is the Varnada lagna calculated?
Count to the Lagna from Aries forward if it sits in an odd sign, or from Pisces backward if even; do the same for the Hora lagna. Add the two counts if the two signs share parity and take their difference if they do not, then count the result off in the direction the Lagna's parity sets.
Which special lagnas have more than one accepted formula?
Two. The Sri lagna can take the Moon's traversal as a fraction of its nakshatra or of its pada, and the Varnada lagna's final count can be reversed by the Lagna's parity or by the result's. AstroShruti computes both readings of each, defaults to the better-sourced one, and lets you switch in Settings → Lagnas (Advanced).
Is the Pranapada lagna included?
No. AstroShruti deliberately defers the Pranapada lagna — it follows a variant formula that the engine does not yet implement, so the special-lagna atom shows six lagnas rather than an unvalidated seventh.
