What Mangal Dosha is

Mangal Dosha — Manglik, and Kuja Dosha in the south — is the classical objection raised when Mars occupies certain houses in a marriage chart. It is the most widely known dosha in Indian astrology and the one most likely to be discussed by people who have never looked at a chart.

The reasoning is straightforward within the tradition’s own terms. Mars is the graha of heat, force, assertion and conflict. Placed where it can act on the marriage — the seventh house of the spouse, the eighth of longevity, the fourth of domestic peace, the second of family, the twelfth of the bed, the first of the self — it is read as introducing friction into the union.

The rule the engine applies

Mars is checked in six houses from three reference points:

Houses are counted whole-sign: Mars’s sign relative to the reference sign gives the house number directly. If Mars lands in one of the six from any of the three references, the chart carries the dosha. This is the AstroSage/Drik convention — checking all three references rather than the Lagna alone is the broader of the common approaches, and it is the one this app takes.

The couple verdict

Mangal Dosha is not really a property of one chart; it is asked about a pair. The app computes both charts and returns one of four verdicts:

The balanced case is the classical rule and it is worth stating clearly: the tradition holds that two Manglik charts neutralise each other, and that this is the standard remedy for the situation. If both partners carry it, the tradition’s own position is that there is no objection.

These four verdicts feed the blended advanced score in Kundli Milan at 15% weight, contributing 100, 80, 60 and 35 out of 100 respectively.

Cancellation: what the tradition says, and what we do

The classical literature is generous with cancellation (bhanga) grounds — conditions under which Mangal Dosha is held not to apply despite the placement. Some of the commonly cited ones:

• Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn).
• Mars aspected by or conjunct Jupiter or the Moon.
• Both partners Manglik.
• Mars in the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn, or other sign-specific exemptions.
• The affliction falling in a sign owned by a benefic.
• Various age-based rules — the dosha weakening after 28.

The sheer number of these grounds is itself informative. A rule with this many exits is one the tradition has been quietly reluctant to enforce.

AstroShruti checks two of these grounds and reports them without applying them. If Mars is in Aries or Scorpio the report prints “Mars in own sign”; if Mars is in Capricorn it prints “Mars exalted in Capricorn”. Those notes appear beside the dosha — and the dosha still reads as present, and the intensity does not drop.

This is deliberate and it is the same policy the Nadi and Bhakoot doshas follow in Ashtakoota. A calculator that silently flips a verdict on a rule the user cannot see is asking for trust it has not earned. We would rather show you the placement, show you the ground, and let you — or an astrologer who can weigh the whole chart — decide what it is worth.

The practical consequence: our Manglik verdict is deliberately the conservative reading. Sites that apply cancellations automatically will clear charts we still flag. Neither is a calculation error; it is a disclosed difference in policy.

A note on proportion

This section exists because the word Manglik does real damage, and a page that explains the rule without saying this would be incomplete.

Look at the arithmetic. Six houses out of twelve is half the chart. That test is run three times, from three independent reference points. A chart escapes the label only if Mars avoids half the zodiac from the Lagna and half from the Moon and half from Venus. Under the three-reference convention this app uses, a large fraction of all charts ever cast are Manglik — including a great many belonging to people in long, unremarkable marriages.

A finding that common cannot carry the weight that gets put on it. The tradition itself clearly sensed this, which is why it built so many cancellation routes and why “both Manglik” resolves the matter entirely.

We compute Mangal Dosha because it is part of Kundli Milan, because you asked, and because reporting it accurately is better than reporting it badly. What it does not do is predict a marriage’s outcome, and no serious reading of the classical material claims it does. If the label has landed on your chart, the proportionate response is to take the full report to an astrologer who will read the whole horoscope — not to treat one planet’s house position as a verdict on a life.

What we do not compute

• Cancellations are surfaced, never applied. Own sign and exaltation are detected and printed; the dosha still reports as present at unchanged intensity.
• Only two cancellation grounds are checked at all. Own sign (Aries, Scorpio) and exaltation (Capricorn). Jupiter’s or the Moon’s aspect, the sign-specific seventh-house exemptions, benefic dispositor rules and every age-based rule are not implemented. If your astrologer applies one, this engine has not.
• Whole-sign houses only. Mars’s house is derived from sign distance, not from cusps — so a Placidus or bhava-chalit chart may place Mars in a different house than this check does. See Bhaav Nirdeshan for how the app handles cusps elsewhere.
• Only Mars’s house is examined. Not its dignity beyond own-sign and exaltation, not its aspects, not its conjunctions, not its nakshatra, not its strength. There is no combustion, retrogression or bala weighting in this check.
• No age rule. The engine does not know or use anyone’s current age here.
• No Kuja Dosha regional variants. The southern tradition’s differing house sets and reference conventions are not offered as options; the app computes the six-house, three-reference version described above.
• No outcome prediction. The dosha is a placement report and a traditional label. It is not a forecast.

Notes on this calculation

• Houses checked: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 — whole sign.
• References: Lagna, Moon and Venus. Any one is enough to flag.
• Intensity is the count of flagging references: 1 low, 2 medium, 3 high.
• Couple verdicts: clean / balanced / mild_mismatch / mismatch; both-Manglik reads as balanced.
• Cancellation grounds are reported, not applied — the verdict does not flip.
• Contributes 15% to the blended advanced score; contributes nothing to the 36-point Guna Milan total.
