Bhagya Saham — The Fortune Point in the KP Frame
Ascendant + Moon − Sun by day, reversed by night. The fortune point placed on KP cusps with its full star, sub and sub-sub lord chain — plus the other 35 sahams on demand.
The idea
A saham is a computed point rather than a body. You take three positions already in the chart, add and subtract them, and the result is a longitude that carries a meaning — a place in the zodiac where a particular matter is said to concentrate.
The best known is Bhagya, the fortune point, called Punya Saham in Tajika and the Part of Fortune in the Western tradition. Same construction in all three.
The formula
Ascendant + Moon − Sun, for a day birth.
For a night birth the luminaries swap: Ascendant + Sun − Moon.
That reversal is not a footnote. The two versions can land in completely different houses, so the day/night determination has to be right, and it is not a question about the clock. The app computes sunrise and sunset at the chart’s own place and date and asks whether the Sun was above the horizon at that moment. A birth ten minutes before sunrise and one ten minutes after get genuinely different fortune points — as they should.
At polar latitudes where the Sun does not rise or set at all, the calculation falls back to treating the birth as a day birth, following the Tajika convention.
What the KP frame adds
AstroShruti has computed sahams for a while, inside the engine that serves the annual chart. That engine works in a whole-sign frame, which for a Tajika reading is correct — and for a KP reading is unusable, because it cannot answer the two questions a KP astrologer asks first.
So the point is recomputed here in the KP frame:
- KP-ayanamsha longitudes, so the point sits in the same zodiac as everything else on these pages;
- the Placidus cusp-to-cusp house, so “which bhava is Bhagya in” has the same meaning here as it does everywhere else in KP;
- the full lord chain — sign lord, star lord, sub lord, sub-sub lord — because that is the only form in which a KP astrologer can act on a longitude at all.
The arithmetic itself is shared with the Tajika engine rather than restated. A saham formula takes longitudes, an ascendant and a day/night flag; none of that is Tajika-specific, so there is one implementation of the 36 formulae and two frames placed around it.
Reading it
Read the point exactly as you would read a cusp:
- The house it falls in says where the matter shows up.
- The star lord is the source — which houses are in play.
- The sub lord decides. As everywhere in KP, this is the one that says yes or no, and a fortune point whose sub lord signifies obstructing houses is not a diluted promise but a denied one.
The sub-sub lord refines. The sign lord is context.
What the app does not do is turn any of this into a verdict about your fortune. It computes the point, places it, and resolves its chain. The judgement is the astrologer’s.
Verification
For our reference chart the point lands at 35°38′33″, with Venus as sign lord and Mercury as sub lord — reproducing a mainstream KP program to the arc-second, including its house placement.
One implementation note, recorded because it cost real debugging time: the underlying Tajika saham longitude is rounded to four decimal places before the KP wrapper receives it, so equality checks against it need a small tolerance rather than exactness.
The other thirty-five
The full set covers the classical range of matters — siblings, mother, father, marriage, disease, wealth, and so on. They are computed with the same machinery and placed in the same frame.
They sit behind a toggle rather than on screen by default because the reading genuinely is Bhagya-first: it is the point printed beside a KP chart, and the other thirty-five are consulted when a specific question sends you to one of them.
The settings that are not yours
As on every KP page, the KP ayanamsha and Placidus houses are forced here regardless of Advanced Settings. A fortune point is a longitude, and a longitude read in one ayanamsha but housed in another belongs to no system at all.

Frequently asked questions
Is Bhagya Saham the same as the Part of Fortune?
It is the same construction. The Arabic Part of Fortune, the Tajika Punya Saham and the Bhagya point KP software prints are all Ascendant + Moon − Sun, reversed for a night birth. The name changes with the tradition; the arithmetic does not.
Why does the formula reverse at night?
It is the classical rule: for a night birth the Sun and Moon exchange places in the formula, giving Ascendant + Sun − Moon. The app determines day or night by computing sunrise and sunset at the chart's own place, so a birth minutes either side of sunrise genuinely gets a different point.
Why compute it again when the annual chart already has sahams?
The Tajika engine computes them in a whole-sign frame. A KP reader needs the two things that frame cannot give: which Placidus house the point falls in, and what its sub lord is.
What about the other 35 sahams?
Available behind a toggle. Bhagya leads because that is how the point is used — printed beside the chart, with the rest as a reference table. The toggle refetches rather than filtering, because computing all 36 is a materially larger job and nobody should pay for it to read one point.
Does a saham predict anything on its own?
No. It is a sensitive point, read like any other KP position — through its lord chain and the house it occupies. The point marks where to look; the sub lord decides what is found there.
