What is the Karakamsha?

The Atmakaraka is the soul-significator — the planet that has crossed the most degrees in its sign, the “king” of a Jaimini chart. The Karakamsha takes that planet’s seat in the navamsa (D9) and treats it as a lagna, a second ascendant read entirely from the soul’s point of view.

The word breaks apart as karaka + amsha — the (Atma)karaka’s division, i.e. the navamsa sign of the Atmakaraka. That sign has two names depending on how you use it:

• as a point, the Atmakaraka’s navamsa sign is the Swamsha (“one’s own portion”);
• as a chart, the same sign used as a lagna over the birth chart is the Karakamsha.

Read from this soul-lagna, the ordinary rasi placements tell a different story than they do from the physical ascendant — this is one of Jaimini’s core lenses on character, spiritual direction and the shape of a life’s purpose.

How the engine builds it

The construction is two moves:

1. Find the Swamsha. Take the Atmakaraka (from the 7- or 8-karaka scheme) and read the sign it occupies in the D9 navamsa chart. That is the Swamsha.
2. Read from it as a lagna. Lay that sign down as the 1st house and count the houses using each graha’s rasi (D1) sign. The Karakamsha chart is the birth chart re-anchored on the Swamsha.

The crucial detail is the mix of charts: the lagna comes from the D9, but the placements read against it come from the D1. AstroShruti counts each graha’s house from the Karakamsha by its D1 sign — the navamsa is used only to locate the Swamsha sign itself.

For every chart it reports three things — the raw material of a reading:

• Each graha’s house from the Karakamsha, 1 to 12, counted by rasi sign (all nine grahas: Sun through Saturn, Rahu and Ketu).
• Which grahas conjoin the Karakamsha — those sitting in the Swamsha sign itself in the D1.
• Which grahas cast rashi drishti on it — using the Jaimini sign-aspect rule, so the aspects here are sign aspects, not the Parashari degree aspects.

What “house from the Karakamsha” means

Because houses are counted from the Swamsha by whole rasi signs, a graha’s Karakamsha house is simply how many signs it sits ahead of the Swamsha, counted inclusively. If the Swamsha is Leo and Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Jupiter is in the 5th from the Karakamsha (Leo=1, Virgo=2, Libra=3, Scorpio=4, Sagittarius=5). A graha in the Swamsha sign itself is in the 1st — and is reported as a conjunct graha as well.

A structural example

Suppose the Atmakaraka is Venus, and in the navamsa Venus sits in Scorpio. Then:

• The Swamsha is Scorpio.
• The Karakamsha chart uses Scorpio as the 1st house.

Now read the birth-chart (D1) placements from Scorpio. Say the D1 has the Sun in Scorpio, the Moon in Capricorn, and Mars in Cancer:

The Sun, being in Scorpio, both occupies the 1st house and is listed as conjunct the Karakamsha. Whether Mars in Cancer aspects the Karakamsha is decided by the rashi-drishti rule: Cancer is a movable sign, and its Jaimini sign-aspects fall on the fixed signs — so Cancer does aspect Scorpio, and Mars would appear in the aspecting list. How to read the Karakamsha

• Grahas in and aspecting the Swamsha describe the soul’s nature and the areas its purpose runs through — benefics and malefics on the Karakamsha are read much as planets on any lagna, but at a soul rather than bodily level.
• The house a significant graha holds from the Karakamsha localises a theme: classically, particular grahas in particular houses from the Karakamsha point to vocation, spiritual inclination and the sources of knowledge — this is where much of the Jaimini lore about profession and moksha is anchored.
• Because the Karakamsha shares its raw ingredients with the Jaimini Yogas, several yoga rules are read straight off the grahas conjoining and aspecting the Swamsha.

The specific verse-by-verse readings — which graha in which house from the Karakamsha gives which result — are classical Jaimini lore, not something AstroShruti computes into a verdict. The app gives you the exact structural facts (the Swamsha sign, each graha’s house from it, the conjunctions and the sign-aspects) and leaves the interpretive rules to the reader and the yoga pack.

Honest notes

• The lagna is from the D9, the placements from the D1. This split is deliberate and is the defining feature of the Karakamsha; do not read the navamsa placements around the Swamsha — read the rasi ones.
• The Atmakaraka depends on the karaka scheme (7 or 8). A different scheme can in principle pick a different Atmakaraka and therefore a different Swamsha, so the Karakamsha inherits whatever scheme the Chara Karakas were computed under.
• Aspects onto the Karakamsha are rashi (sign) drishti, the Jaimini rule — not the Parashari graha aspects. The two do not agree in general.
• AstroShruti reports the facts, not the classical interpretive verdicts; those are lore, applied on top of the structural output.
