What is an Arudha Pada?

Most of a chart tells you what is. The Arudha Padas tell you what appears — the perceived image, the reputation, the material shadow a house casts into the world. Jaimini’s insight is that reality and its image are two different points in the zodiac, and both matter.

The most-used of these is the Arudha Lagna (AL), the image of the ascendant: not who you are, but how you are seen and the standing you actually hold. But every house has an arudha, and AstroShruti computes all twelve.

The rule that produces them is a reflection. A house is ruled by a lord; the lord sits some distance away; the arudha is that same distance projected once more. The image is as far beyond the lord as the lord is beyond the house — the house seen twice-removed, through the mirror of its ruler.

The reflection rule

The computation is a single step in whole-sign arithmetic:

Count from the house-sign to the sign of its lord; project the same count onward from the lord.

Written as signs, that is:

arudha sign = ( 2 × lord's sign − house's sign )   (mod 12)

So if a house’s lord sits 5 signs away, the arudha is 5 signs beyond the lord — 10 signs from the house. The pada is always counted by whole signs, exactly like the Rashi Drishti aspects; degrees within a sign never enter it.

The two classical exceptions

Left alone, the reflection can drop the pada right back onto the house it is supposed to image, or straight across from it — either of which defeats the purpose. Two classical corrections prevent this. AstroShruti applies them exactly as the texts state:

• If the computed pada falls in the same sign as the house (this happens when the lord is in the 1st or the 7th from the house), or
• If it falls in the 7th sign from the house,

then the pada is moved to the 10th sign from that computed pada. In every other case the reflection stands as computed.

The engine flags each pada with whether this correction was applied, so you can always see which arudhas are “as reflected” and which were redirected.

The twelve padas and their labels

AstroShruti computes a pada for every house, 1 through 12, and labels three of them by their traditional names:

The intervening houses are simply labelled A2 … A11; only the 1st and 12th get the special names AL and UL.

Worked examples

Take an Aries ascendant, so the 1st house is Aries (sign 0) and its lord is Mars.

Normal case. Suppose Mars sits in Leo (sign 4).

arudha = (2 × 4 − 0) mod 12 = 8  → Sagittarius

Sagittarius is neither Aries (the house itself) nor Libra (the 7th from Aries), so no exception applies. AL = Sagittarius.

Exception 1 — pada lands on the house itself. Suppose Mars sits in Aries (sign 0), in the 1st from the house.

arudha = (2 × 0 − 0) mod 12 = 0  → Aries, the house itself → exception
corrected = 10th sign from Aries = Capricorn

AL = Capricorn.

Exception 2 — pada lands in the 7th. Suppose Mars sits in Cancer (sign 3), the 4th from the house.

arudha = (2 × 3 − 0) mod 12 = 6  → Libra, the 7th from Aries → exception
corrected = 10th sign from Libra = Cancer

AL = Cancer.

These three cover every shape the rule can take: reflected cleanly, or redirected because it would otherwise fall in the house or its opposite.

How to read the padas

• The Arudha Lagna is read as a second ascendant for worldly image: planets in and aspecting the AL shape reputation, visibility and material fortune. A benefic on the AL lifts standing; the 2nd and 11th from the AL are classically the “sustenance” and “gain” of that image.
• The Upapada (UL) and the sign 2nd from it are the classical handle on marriage and the spouse.
• Because arudhas are the perceived chart, they often disagree with the real houses — and that disagreement is exactly the signal. A strong 10th house with a weak A10 is competence the world underrates; the reverse is reputation that outruns the substance.

Honest notes

• The pada is a whole-sign reflection; it uses the lord’s sign, never its degree. Two charts with the same sign-placements produce the same padas even if the degrees differ wildly.
• Only the seven sign-owning planets act as lords. Rahu and Ketu own no sign and are never used as the reflecting lord here.
• The two exceptions — pada in the house itself, or in the 7th from it — both redirect to the 10th from the computed pada, and AstroShruti marks each pada with whether it was corrected.
• Some traditions define Arudha for the nodes’ co-lordships or use different exception thresholds; AstroShruti follows the standard reflection with the 1st / 7th correction as described above, and does not silently blend schools.
