What is the Bhava Chalit chart?

The Bhava Chalit — the “moved-house” chart — answers a question the rasi chart quietly assumes away: which house does a planet really sit in?

The Lagna Chart (D1) uses whole-sign houses. A planet’s house is just its sign counted from the lagna sign, so an entire sign is one house and every planet in that sign shares it. That is clean and it is how most of Parashari astrology is read — but it hides something. Houses in the sky are not thirty degrees wide from a sign edge. They are arcs measured from the ascendant, and those arcs drift across sign boundaries.

The Bhava Chalit restores the arcs. It places each graha by the unequal house (bhava) it actually occupies, and then shows you where that disagrees with the whole-sign house. Surfacing that disagreement is the entire point of the worksheet — it is what AstroSage’s Chalit chart shows too.

Whole-sign versus Sripati bhava

Two ways to answer “what house is this planet in”:

  • Whole-sign (rasi): count signs from the lagna sign. If the lagna is in Leo, everything in Leo is the 1st house, everything in Virgo is the 2nd, and so on. The planet’s degree inside the sign does not matter.
  • Bhava (Chalit): measure real arcs from cusp longitudes. A house may run 26° wide or 34° wide, and it can start partway through one sign and end partway through the next.

AstroShruti computes the Chalit on Swiss Ephemeris’ native Sripati (‘S’) cusps. Swiss Ephemeris returns these as bhava starts, with the lagna sitting as the madhya (middle) of the first bhava rather than at its start. A planet belongs to bhava i when it lies on the forward arc from cusp i up to (but not including) cusp i+1.

The arc rule the engine uses

Placement is a single, unambiguous rule. Given the twelve cusp longitudes, a point belongs to the first bhava whose forward arc contains it:

  • Take the arc of bhava i as the forward distance from cusp[i] to the next cusp, cusp[i+1] (wrapping past 360° at the twelfth).
  • Take the planet’s offset as the forward distance from cusp[i] to the planet.
  • If that offset is less than the arc length, the planet is in bhava i.

Because the twelve arcs tile the full circle with no gaps and no overlap, exactly one bhava always wins. There is no “on the boundary” ambiguity: an offset equal to the arc length has already rolled into the next bhava, since the arc is the half-open range [cusp_i, cusp_{i+1}).

The whole-sign house, for comparison, is computed the plain way: take the planet’s sign index, subtract the ascendant’s sign index, wrap to twelve, add one. The engine compares the two and sets a shifted flag whenever the bhava and the whole-sign house differ.

A structural example: the planet on the edge

Walk the rule with a planet near a sign boundary. Suppose the lagna is in Leo, so Leo is the whole-sign 1st house and Virgo the 2nd. Now put a planet at the very end of Leo — say 29° Leo.

  • Whole-sign says: the planet is in Leo, and Leo is the 1st house from the Leo lagna. Rasi house = 1.
  • Sripati says: the 2nd bhava’s cusp arc may begin at, say, 27° Leo (bhavas are unequal, so the boundary need not sit at 0° Virgo). Our planet at 29° Leo is already past that cusp — it lies inside the 2nd bhava’s arc. Bhava = 2.

Bhava (2) differs from the rasi house (1), so the engine flags the planet as shifted. Read literally: the planet looks like a 1st-house planet on the rasi chart but behaves like a 2nd-house planet on the ground. That single flag is often the difference between a prediction that lands and one that misses.

The reverse happens just as often: a planet a degree or two into a new sign can still fall inside the previous bhava’s arc, so a planet that reads as the 5th house by sign actually works as the 4th.

How the app shows it

In the AstroShruti app, the Bhava Chalit atom leads with the reading, not the arithmetic. It first states how many grahas shifted — “No planet shifts bhava — every graha sits in its rasi house,” or “N graha(s) occupy a different bhava than their rasi house” — and then shows a table:

Every planet appears, but the shifted ones carry the signal: the bhava number is highlighted in gold with an arrow showing the direction of the shift (down toward an earlier bhava, or up toward a later one). The unshifted grahas sit quietly, confirming the two charts agree for them.

The cusp longitudes those bhavas are measured from live in the sibling Bhava Cusps atom — that table is the arithmetic behind this reading.

Honest notes and limitations

  • This is a Parashari worksheet, not KP. The Chalit here uses Sripati arcs and reports each cusp’s sign lord. It does not compute a cuspal sub-lord — the layer that drives KP significators — so do not read KP judgements off it. For that, use the KP side and its Cuspal Interlinks.
  • Only the house changes; the sign does not. A shifted planet keeps its sign, its dignity, and its dispositor. The Chalit never moves a planet into a different sign; it only reassigns the house arc. Read dignity from the sign on Grah Stithi and the house from the Chalit.
  • The cusps depend on your settings. The bhava arcs are built from your chosen ayanamsha, so the exact cusp longitudes — and therefore which planets shift — move slightly if you change the ayanamsha. The whole-sign house never does, which is one reason the two charts can drift apart at the margins.

Where it connects

The Bhava Chalit sits between the Lagna Chart, which gives the whole-sign houses it is compared against, and the Bhava Cusps, which hold the raw cusp longitudes. The same whole-sign-versus-arc distinction reappears whenever you move to the Divisional Charts, where a small change in a planet’s longitude can change its varga sign entirely — the divisional analogue of a bhava shift.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the rasi chart and the Bhava Chalit chart?

The rasi (D1) chart uses whole-sign houses — a planet's house is simply its sign counted from the lagna sign, so the whole sign is one house. The Bhava Chalit chart uses unequal house arcs (Sripati bhavas) measured from actual cusp longitudes, so a planet is placed by the arc it really occupies. The two agree for most planets and disagree only for a planet sitting near a sign edge.

Why does a planet shift house between the two charts?

Because a Sripati bhava does not line up with a sign boundary. A planet in the last degrees of one sign can fall inside the next bhava's arc, and a planet in the first degrees of a sign can still belong to the previous bhava. When the bhava the planet occupies differs from its whole-sign house, AstroShruti marks it "shifted".

Which house system does the Bhava Chalit use?

Should I read a planet from its sign or its bhava?

Read both. The sign tells you the graha's dignity and dispositor; the bhava tells you which area of life it actually acts on. For a planet flagged as shifted, the bhava is often the more honest house for prediction, which is exactly why the classical texts keep the Chalit alongside the rasi chart.
